Jose’ Carreira has been inventing, producing and perfecting swimming pool chemicals since 1994. He is passionate about his work and has never found a pool problem that he could not resolve.

Jose’ and his wife Jackie had their first success with a range called Pool Magic and remember standing in the patents office deciding on the logo – 2 little feet in a splash of water.

Under the name Eco H2 Zero they have now produced a range of 12 products that are designed to be as eco friendly as possible, work fantastically and put satisfied smiles on their customer’s faces.

These chemicals treat the toughest algae, bacteria, viruses and pathogens. ZERO 365 is their most innovative one. It only gets added once a year and then activated periodically with an oxygen releasing compound called Oxy power.

In striving for a greener, better environment, some of the raw materials used, are used by farmers in their animal feeds, in the vitamin and medicine industry and in ordinary cooking. The long lasting effect of the products, and their gentle effect on the environment also reduces the total amount of harsh chemicals added annually to more than 800 000 swimming pools in South Africa alone.

Everyday more and more harsh chemicals are made and sold. These chemicals do not just disappear from the earth the moment they go down the drain or into rivers! They have long lasting detrimental effects that continue to harm our planet!

History:

1994 The beginning

Serious algae problems. Aqua Magic was first developed in 1994. It was used in very green or very problematic pools where the pool owners had given up hope!

The answer. It fixed their pools up and made the water change to a crystal clear blue. This condition was long lasting, cost effective and made the pool owners very happy!

Word of mouth. We soon built up a collection of “thank you” letters. Our very first letter was from Mr Clive Perks living in North Rand Gauteng. He became a boost for our tiny business by recommending our “primitive algae black magic” to all his friends for pool problems. Pure word of mouth boosted our business beyond expectations!

Big turning point. The winter of 1994 brought a big surprise! Mr Nick Coetzee living in Vereeniging phoned us in September 1994 and told us how fantastic this product was and that he wanted to become an agent! We were surprised and asked what it had done in his pool. He said that he used one pack in March 1994 to kill black algae in his pool. The algae disappeared, the water had turned a nice blue and for 6 months he had done nothing else to his pool!! He wanted to sell this “Magic”

First agent. We promptly set an appointment to see him that evening and told him that the minimum order was 100 packs. He agreed to pay COD.
Mad rush. This was unexpected and for the next 3 hours we had our 5 children all helping us to make up 100 units of “Magic”. The room was full of chemical dust in the air and we were all busy. The product was delivered on time.

Gave up our jobs. There were many similar incidents that followed and we soon gave up our permanent jobs to produce “Aqua Magic” full time. This product was soon selling in most flea markets in Gauteng at R18.00 per pack. Slowly more and more agents also gave up their jobs and pension schemes to sell Aqua Magic full time.

52 Formula changes. In November 1996 we changed the formula for the last time. There had been numerous changes and improvements in the formula, some serious problems too. It was tricky to produce one product with one dosage to cater for the different pool characteristics, conditions and problems, but at last, that was it!

Name change. The product name changed to “Pool Magic” because the name “Aqua Magic” had already been registered by a company called Swimline.

From strength to strength. We were blessed with a compact, powerful team. From the factory manager, to the production team to the agents, we boldly pioneered the commercial use of copper sulphate and zinc in private and public pools. At that time some powerful chemical companies tried to shut us down by widespread use of propaganda and scary looking photographic posters that were distributed through pool shops around the country. However the firm resolve of our agents, word of mouth and fantastic results in pools made us stronger and stronger. We simply continued to grow.

The new Eco Aqua Magic of 2010. Now, after trying many times we have come up with a new formula. We have been developing a new product that could break all boundaries! Eventually on 24th January 2010 after many many tests, we finally approved the formula for our new Eco Aqua Magic!

What does it do? We needed it to be kind to our earth, children and pools. It also had to be cost effective and be beneficial to everyone.

Description of functions in a pool:

• It is eco friendly and contains no harsh chemicals.
• Very effectively eliminates green brown and black algae.
• Flocculates fine sediment that would pass right through a sand filter.
• Chelates problematic chemicals and minerals – encloses them in a “safe package”.
• Sequestrates useful chemicals – keeps them working more efficiently.
• “Polishes” the water to remove oils from suntan lotions, humans and leaves.
• Progressively removes phosphates – an essential algae food.
• Each dosage progressively improves the water quality to prevent “tired, old water”.
• Gentle on eyes and skin.
• Healthy to swim in and safe for pets, birds and bees to drink.
• Reduces the need for chlorine from 3ppm to only 0,5ppm – (6 times less)
• Saves the pool owner hassles, time and money.
• It is reliable, works and promotes crystal clear problem free water.

In fact it pays for itself from the first month by saving on stabilisers, acids, gel blocks, metal removers, flocculants, algaecides and chlorines!!!
